âToo Many Passions, No Direction? Watch This (It Made Me Rich)â
This is the exact title of a YouTube video I came across earlier this week.
Naturally, I watched it.
Not because it said âMade Me Richâ, but because it said âNo Directionâ.
NO DIRECTION.
The video begins with a fictional scenario of a job interview, where the employer tells the interviewee that they will not be hired, due to the many different skills written mentioned in their résumé:
â Sorry, but we need someone that can only do one thing.â
I instantly remembered a moment in my own life, when I was sitting face-to-face with someone from the German unemployment office and after looking at my CV, skills and work experience they told me âThis is too much, there is too much on here. We need to make it more simple.â It was a very clearly outlined, 1-page document listing only my work relevant skills and experience. The problem was, many of my skills donât serve the regular job market.
Being too much. Not clear enough for society. Not fitting into a single box. Many twists and turns in life. Learning a wide variety of skills. Bonus points for spiritual out-of-the-box interests. A recipe for âunemploymentâ.
People donât understand my direction.
Something that defines our worth on the market: income, value, replaceability, stability... Your whole worth depends on your direction, and many of us are told we should choose a path and direction after finishing school, specializing ourselves on that thing and climbing up the ladder of a career. Luckily, many of us have found out that this is not at all true in life.
Actually, we do NOT have to decide at 18 what our direction for the rest of our lives is. We donât have to specialize in a single field and work there until retirement. We do, not at all, have to stop learning things we are passionate about. In fact, we are free to change our careers, our interests, and the direction of our lives whenever we want to. But many of us are afraid.
Being âdirection-lessâ is something I was born with! :)
In fact, my direction was to experiment with life and try new things. I have learned piano, flute, drums, guitar, bell choir, gospel singing and participated in ballett, jazz, basketball, taekwando, horseback riding and hula-hooping⊠never sticking with one thing for more than a few years. Today, I know that my Human Design line 6 leads me to thirty years of testing out life, before I then slowly begin to figure out what fits to me and what doesnât. But itâs more than that. I have always had a craving for variety. I like to understand things, to see how they work. And so I am naturally drawn to study things from multiple perspectives at the same time.
After high school, I studied Economic Sciences at a University that specifically combined my multitude of interests and therefore contained a mix of macro- and microeconomics, psychology, ethics, math and statistics. I continued studying a masterâs degree in Bioeconomy, an interdisciplinary study program connecting Economics, Agriculture and Natural Sciences. These two degrees formed foundational knowledge in a wide variety of topics including biology, physics, organization, politics, philosophy and history, helping me understand the world better.
I grasp how social systems work, but also how natural organisms and microbes behave. Iâm able to make calculations, but I am also focused on philosophical understanding and moral values. I wrote my first thesis about (un)ethical marketing and the milk industry â connecting my passions for philosophy and health. My second thesis I wrote my thesis about Post-Growth Economic Systems and Food Sharing systems â connecting my desire to improve sustainability and human happiness.
Outside of universityâŠ
âŠI began exploring yoga and breath work techniques, which moved me to the Tarot and the field of hermeticism. This moved me to understanding more about the tree of life, about ancient philosophies, about life in general, about energy and non-physical things. It connected my body with my soul with my spirit and moved me.
Tarot moved me learn Astrology, which moved me to working with archetypes, which moved me to myth and dream interpretation, which moved me to Jungian Analysis, which moved me to morphic resonance theory, which moved me to systemic constellation, which moved me to Embodied Astrology, which moved me to Human Design and the Gene Keys, which moved me to the ancient I-ching, which moved me to coaching and NLP, which moved me to health and embodiment practices, which moved me to the Vagus Nerve, which moved me to healing attachment trauma, which moved me to communication practices, which moved me to psychology and gut health correlations, to which moved me to lymphatic health, which moved me to Ayurveda, which moved me to read ancient tantric philosophy, which moved me to Pranayama.
Drawing and sketching moved me to intuitive channeling, which moved me to archetypal understanding, which moved me to artistic alchemy, which moved me to artistic exploration of plant spirits, which moved me to natural tinctures and plant dyes, which moved me to curate an exhibition about plant consciousness and sustainability.
Writing poetry moved me to learn guitar, which moved me to sing my own songs, which moved me to record and edit, which moved me to learn video editing, which moved me to use a loop-station, which moved me to read my poetry with live-looping, which moved me to learn more editing, which moved me to make my first art films, which is moving me to learn more recording techniques and audio-engineering.
The video brings up a great point:
Ultimately, being multi-passionate is a beautiful thing, because it means that whatever you do â youâre never really in a beginner state.
The rich foundation and mix of knowledge are skills that allow one to easily pick up on and process new information, therefore learning easily and developing even more skills.
And so I can take a saxophone in my hand and improvise with it after a few minutes without ever having touched it before. Or learn a new software and play around with it, making my first own creations on the first day. I can easily apply knowledge from one field in a completely different are. This also helps me to teach and explain things quite well. Making metaphors comes naturally to me, but also I understand how different approaches work and can adapt my language style to suit different needs. And of course, because of this, I quickly notice similarities, differences, overlaps, connections etc. and make hypotheses, suggestions, questions, and form new ideas!
Nowadays, I simply call this âŠ. Living holistically.
Holistic
During my university time, I became fascinated with the word âholisticâ, hearing it the first time during my studies. I absolutely loved it. Perhaps it resonated on such a deep level of my soul, never before knowing that this was a concept. An approach. One deeply rooted within me. And so it is my approach. My wisdom. My way of living.
holistic: (adjective)
1: of or relating to holism
2: relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts

holism: (noun)
1: a theory that the universe and especially living nature is correctly seen in terms of interacting wholes (as of living organisms) that are more than the mere sum of elementary particles
2: a study or method of treatment that is concerned with wholes or with complete systems : a holistic study or method of treatment

LIFE IS HOLISTIC from my point of view, and that is how I want to explore it.
I am not direction-less but choose many directions. I actually just happen to have a passion to understand life deeply!
Many of the things I have learned have ultimately helped me to learn about myself and live a much happier, healthier life. None of it has been without value for me.
It has shaped my conversations, my confidence, my abilities.
It has also given me so much joy, fascination, intrigue.
Today, I understand better and better why I am like this and how my path is shaping and carving its way before me as I explore and connect.
I never feel like having wasted time or having learned âthe wrong thingsâ. Because to me, it always makes complete sense. I recognize, that I am like this for a purpose.
That I am supposed to be like this, that this is my talent and my path for life.
That I am not interested in swimming in the surface, neither in deciding for one direction, but that I am here to dive deep into a multitude of complexity and extract beautiful gems of wisdom.
That I am here to be a role model by walking my own authentic path.
That I am here to learn about mysticism and unseen worlds.
That I am here to translate knowledge and emotion through sound, movement, words.
That I am here to support myself and others with a wide ray of insight.
That I am here to be passionate and creative, to be courageous and visionary.
And perhaps that can be even be called myâŠ. direction?!
Multi-passionately weaving threads and making connections. Using different skills to envision, create, craft ideas for a more sustainable living. Crafting art, music and performances that connect us to the magic of life and its many facets. Sharing knowledge, insights and practices to support paths of health and transformation.
Not everyone may be like this.
This is not about right or wrong, better or worse. This is simply about multi-passionate.
And if you are like me, then you should always dare to follow those passions, trusting â in fact, knowing â that they are moving you to interesting connections.
In the end, there is a larger story being woven throughout your life and exploring your passions will bring some unexpected fruits along the way.
The red thread is always there.
It may just seem invisible to the âuntrainedâ eye.
Do you feel pressure to decide between your passions? What helps you to accept your multi-passionate self?
Hereâs a little secret:
